January 19th, 2020
Yas Marina F1 Circuit, Abu Dhabi–

In another successful weekend for BlackArts Racing team, Dutch driver Joey Alders took another win in the OLOI Powered by BAR car, while Thomas Luedi of Switzerland took double Masters podiums.

Friday 17 Jan Race One:

Due to an outstanding qualifying run in Friday afternoon’s Qualifying One, Joey Alders in the OLOI Powered by BARcar started P2 alongside Ukyo Sasahara, the 2019 Asian F3 Champion.

With Sasahara getting off to a strong start, Alders managed to hold onto 2nd place for most of the race until a rare mistake cost him dearly, dropping back to finish 5th. Despite the points lost from a fifth-place finish, BlackArtsRacing’s Joey Alders maintained his grip on the championship lead. However, 2019 Asian F3 season runner-up Red Bull driver Jack Doohan finished 3rd, and due to Sasahara’s ineligibility to score points as a Guest Driver because he was the 2019 Asian F3 Champion, the second place points finish narrowed the gap between Doohan and Alders to 31 points, with eight races remaining after Friday’ race.

Unfortunately, BlackArts Racing teammates, Masters driver Thomas Luedi and Race 6 winner Yu Kanamaru, retired early on in the race due to technical issues.

Saturday 18 Jan Race Two:

Alders started P3 on the grid directly behind Williams F1 development driver Jamie Chadwick, dropping back to 4th in the opening laps to fall behind Chadwick-Doohan-Sasahara. After a safety car period due to the collision between Seven GP’s Tatiana Calderón and Absolute Racing’s Tommy Smith, Alders found his way past Sasahara on Lap 7, and two laps later, Doohan pulled over and retired with a technical issue, handing the Dutch driver second. Crossing the checkered in 2nd, the Dutchman was later awarded the win after Chadwick was handed a 20 second penalty for a jump start.

Meanwhile BAR’s Yu Kanamaru had an absolutely amazing drive, having started in P15 due to the DNF in Race One and moving up an incredible 9 positions to finish 6th. However, the Japanese driver also received a 20 second penalty due to a starting grid procedure infringement due to a technical issue on his car, which dropped him to 11th in the final results.

In the Masters, Thomas Luedi took to the podium in 2nd ahead of Paul Wong, but behind local driver Khaled Al Qubaisi.

Saturday 18th January Race Three:

Alders started P6 after a disappointing Qualifying Two on Friday while under heavy traffic. During the race, Alders maintained position to finish in P6, while Yu Kanamaru finished P11 and started the race with another strong drive up the field but was hit by into the guardrail by a competitor to DNF.
However, Thomas Luedi brought another trophy to the team with his second Masters podium of the weekend, beating Paul Wong to finish 2nd, behind Khaled Al Qubaisi.

With six races to go, Joey Alders leads the Drivers Championship with 173 points to Red Bull driver Jack Doohan in 2nd with 125 points, and F2 driver Nikita Mazepin at 124 points completing the top three.

In the Masters, due mainly to technical DNFs, Thomas Luedi trails rival Paul Wong by 48 points, at 177 vs 129 points in P2, with his eyes on the Masters Champion trophy.

BlackArts Racing has now extended its team championship lead with 221 points to Pinnacle Motorsport’s 187 and Absolute Racing’s 161.

The 2020 Asian F3 Certified by FIA Championship will now head back to Sepang International F1 Circuit for Round 4 on Feb 14th-15th With only 6 races remaining, it is all coming down to the line with the championship still up for grabs.
